WJLA in Washington, DC is seeking a news manager with major market experience to join the team as Assistant News Director.
Our newsroom is dedicated to audience-first storytelling, asking the questions they want answered, holding leaders accountable and getting the information they want to the places they go to find it.
The Successful Candidate:
- First-rate editorial judgment and communication skills.
- In-depth knowledge of major issues in politics, education, public safety, the economy and other primary areas of public interest.
- Creative multi-platform storyteller able to quickly and effectively copy edit shows, packages and posts for impact, clarity and accuracy.
- Actively engaged in daily news cycle, works closely with other news managers to ensure we stay on top of breaking news and important developments in ongoing stories.
- Able to respond quickly to breaking news, redirecting field resources and managing effort inhouse.
- Dedicated to journalistic principles of objectivity and editorial fairness.
- A digital leader who understands news is a 24/7 multi-platform effort.
- Working knowledge of legal issues common to news reporting and how to avoid pitfalls.
- Solution-oriented, positive attitude.
- Well-organized and able to craft and execute cross-platform coverage plans for local breakers and major, scheduled news events.
- Comfortable managing staff, holding people accountable, providing (and accepting) constructive criticism.
- DC area news background a plus.
Requirements:
- Minimum 10 years newsroom experience, 3-5 years in management in Top 40 market.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field.
- Understands the non-stop nature of news and is available to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
